Family photography that feels like your family.
Documentary family sessions across York County, Pennsylvania. Nothing stiff, nobody told how to stand, and a gallery that looks like the people in it. I am a dad with a camera, which is mostly why I know what a session with small children actually involves.
Nobody frames the posed one.
Twenty years from now your kids will not ask about the photograph where everyone looked at the camera. They will ask about the one where Dad is knee-deep in the creek holding a shoe that did not make it.
So sessions run loose. We walk, the kids lead, and I stay out of the way. You do not need to know how to pose and you will not be handed a card to read off. When direction genuinely helps, I give it, and if you want a handful of everyone-looking- at-the-camera frames for your mother, we will make those before we finish. The point is not that the camera never gets acknowledged. The point is that you end up with photographs of your family rather than photographs of your family behaving.
Real families, photographed this year.
That is a handful. The full family gallery has the rest, from maternity through the school years.
What a session actually involves
Before
We pick a spot that suits your family and time it for the good light. I send a short, honest what-to-wear note. That is the whole preparation.
The first ten minutes
Everyone is a bit stiff. That is normal and I plan for it. We walk, we talk, the kids get bored of me, and then the session actually starts.
The rest of it
Mostly you get on with each other while I move around you. If something needs steering I will say so, and if you want a few where everyone is looking at the camera, we make those too.
After
Sneak peeks within about 48 hours. The full gallery inside two weeks, with full-resolution downloads and a print release.
Who these sessions are for
Families with small kids
The ones who have been putting this off because the two year old is feral. That is the session, not the obstacle.
Maternity and the first year
The last quiet weeks, and then the year that disappears fastest. Usually outdoors, usually somewhere you already walk.
Extended family and generations
Everyone in town at the same time for once. Grandparents, cousins, the whole difficult logistics of it.
Milestones worth stopping for
A first birthday, an adoption day, a last summer before someone leaves. The ordinary ones count too.
York County, mostly outdoors
Most sessions happen in the county parks: Rocky Ridge, Nixon Park, Lake Redman, Highpoint Vista. I shoot in Dallastown, Red Lion, Dover, Hanover and around Harrisburg and Lancaster regularly, and I will drive a good distance for decent light.
Your own back yard counts too. Some of the best sessions I have photographed never left the house the family actually lives in.
I wrote up the six locations I recommend most, with the light and the timing for each, and when to actually go month by month.

Every session includes an online gallery, full-resolution downloads and a print release. Prints and albums are available from the gallery and never required.
